Recent results of an APA study indicate that 75% of Americans report experiencing moderate to high stress. Stress is a normal experience and the body’s way of adapting to concerning situations. The stress response, also known as the “fight or flight” response, is a series of hormonal changes that result in physiological responses that prepare the body to deal with a perceived threat.

Treatment Focus - Anxiety

Persistent Worry and Apprehension

Anxiety disorders are characterized by persistent worry and apprehension resulting in avoidance of the unpleasant situation. Anxiety disorders generally fall within one of several categories. Fears related to exposure to a certain trigger situation, or cue, are known as phobias. Being afraid of heights, spiders, or public places are examples of phobias. There are also times when the fear is not situational specific. In this instance, people tend to worry about everything but nothing in particular. Finally, there are anxiety disorders that develop in response to a particularly stressful event. With anxiety disorders, typical symptoms include having a dry mouth, upset stomach, nausea, sweating, and trembling. Individuals experiencing anxiety will often develop avoidant coping skills which can result in staying away from a particular setting (school truancy or job absenteeism) or turning to maladaptive strategies such as substance use. It is common that anxiety disorders occur in conjunction with other mental or behavioral health concerns. For example, individuals with Generalized Anxiety Disorder also suffer from Major Depressive Disorder in two-thirds of cases, Panic Disorder in one third of cases, and have a high rate of co-occurring substance abuse.

Coping with School Anxiety this Fall

Every Fall I was Stressed Out

Every time August comes around and kids are getting ready to go back to school I always think back to my school career. I think back about how every year I was nervous to start school. I wasn’t sure that anyone would like me or want to be my friend. I didn’t know what I would do if there wasn’t one person I knew in any of my classes. Would I be able to make friends or would the teacher be nice?  My senior year in high school was the worst of them all though. I was making the transition in school district and I had to leave all of my friends behind. I remember thinking to myself I don’t know anyone and what if no one will help me with my school work or getting my college applications in on time. What if I don’t get accepted to the school I want or what if I have to leave home? The decisions mixed with not knowing what to expect from my new school terrified me. I was so stressed that I wasn’t sleeping or thinking straight. And, down the road, when my kids start a new school year I know that they will be just as frightened and stressed about the new environment.
